Mexico's 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora is preparing to face South Korea in the 2026 World Cup Group A match after a record-breaking tournament debut.
He addressed reporters at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara on June 17, 2026.
Mora became the youngest player to appear in a World Cup match for Mexico, breaking a national record that stood for 96 years.
Despite the spotlight of representing the host nation in front of 80,000 fans, he remains focused on his game.
"Actually, I don't really look for those kinds of stories that talk about me," Mora said.
The midfielder entered the tournament with significant senior experience, having won the Gold Cup and debuted as the youngest player in senior national team history.
His development at Club Tijuana saw him record 10 goals in 53 appearances, leading to a €20 million release clause.
"Whenever I happen to hear such words, I always focus only on myself and enjoy soccer. I just try to live in the present," he added.
During Mexico's tournament opener against South Africa, Mora logged 24 minutes on the pitch and completed all 14 passes he attempted.
National team manager Javier Aguirre is reportedly evaluating whether to hand the creative number 10 a starting role against South Korea.
"When given the opportunity to play, I simply enjoy the match and show my true self on the field.
I want to maintain this state and prove my soccer in the future. I will pour out everything I have to help the team win," Mora said.
South Korea is expected to test Mexico's tactical setup by absorbing pressure and controlling the center of the pitch.
Mora noted that the opposition's technical readiness requires a disciplined response.
"Of course, I have completed my analysis of the opposing team," he said.
In his preparation, Mora acknowledged the quality across the entire South Korean lineup.
He demonstrated his own capabilities by registering three shots against Ghana and providing an assist against Australia.
"I am well aware that South Korea is a very excellent rival.
They possess players with very high skills not only in the midfield but across the entire lineup of attack and defense," Mora said.

"That is why Mexico must play a tactically perfect match.

"I will go onto the field and enjoy soccer. Whatever playing time I am given, I intend to enjoy it.
