The Boston Red Sox are receiving significant trade inquiries for star closer Aroldis Chapman from multiple MLB contenders, including the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers, as the June 2026 trade deadline approaches.
The 38-year-old eight-time All-Star has posted a 2.08 ERA with 14 saves and 29 strikeouts across 23 appearances this season, making him one of the most sought-after relief pitchers on the market.
Mariners and Dodgers Among Potential Suitors
During an appearance on MLB Network Radio, former general manager Jim Duquette discussed Chapman's potential fit with the Mariners.
The host suggested pairing Chapman with Seattle reliever Andrés Muñoz would create a formidable bullpen duo, calling it a typical move for executive Jerry Dipoto.
Duquette responded that Chapman or Luke Weaver would be "almost a perfect fit" for Seattle.
Meanwhile, the league-leading Los Angeles Dodgers have also been identified as a strong candidate by MLB. com's Mark Feinsand, who highlighted Chapman's historic postseason success following midseason trades.
Feinsand noted that the two previous teams to acquire Chapman at the deadline—the 2016 Chicago Cubs and the 2023 Texas Rangers—both won the World Series that year.
Analysts Warn of Potential Regression
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller cautioned buyers about Chapman's underlying metrics.
Despite a 0.83 ERA, his 2.61 xERA and 3.05 xFIP suggest an impending regression, and his average fastball velocity has dropped by about two miles per hour compared to last season.
Miller wrote that while Chapman could still be a top-10 closer even with a 3.00 ERA, contenders expecting the 2016 version may be mistaken.
Feinsand reported that Chapman converted his first 14 save opportunities this season, posting a 0.83 ERA in 22 appearances before his first blown save since last July.
His fastball averages 97.4 mph, placing him in the 90th percentile, and his 0.9 fWAR ranks 12th among all relievers.
Yankees Reunion Unlikely
A potential return to the New York Yankees appears improbable due to an unresolved dispute from the 2022 postseason, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.
Heyman said on MLB Network that a misunderstanding between Chapman and general manager Brian Cashman makes a deal highly unlikely, despite the team's need for bullpen depth.
Heyman added that Chapman could be the best closer available on the market.
The Red Sox currently sit at the bottom of the American League East with a 31-44 record, positioning them as sellers ahead of the deadline.
