Raul Fernandez claimed his first MotoGP sprint victory of 2026 at the Dutch Grand Prix in Assen on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
The Trackhouse Racing rider overcame a grid penalty to lead a dominant one-two finish for his team.
Fernandez had set the fastest time in qualifying but was penalized for a track limits infringement at the final corner, dropping him to fourth on the grid.
Despite the setback, he climbed through the field during the 13-lap race to defeat teammate Ai Ogura by 0.362 second.
Emotional Response to Penalty
Fernandez expressed deep frustration with the current regulations after the penalty. He channeled his anger into motivation for the sprint race.
"This morning, I was quite angry after what happened in quali," Fernandez said. "I think they are making our sport very boring sometimes.
I don't really agree with the penalty. If I make a mistake, I accept the consequences.
Apart from that I used this bad energy to put all together in the sprint."
Fernandez overtook pole-sitter Jorge Martin on the third lap at the final chicane to establish his lead.
Trackhouse maintained control at the front while technical battles unfolded behind them.
"I am very happy because we are working so well," Fernandez added. "It's really important for the team and for me to be in this position.
It's the first time we made 1-2."
Contract Talks Underway
The strong performance comes amid contract negotiations between Fernandez and Trackhouse Racing for the 2027 season and beyond.
Fernandez acknowledged the importance but remained focused on his performance.
"For sure, it's important. But the things that don't depend on myself, I am not really thinking about those," he said.
"Since two or three races, we are talking with Trackhouse. We had some nice talks.
When we made our first match in '24, the team was almost finishing in the last positions and I was almost in the last positions, so I think we did a really good job together.
I think it is time to make everything work in that way to be continued in the future."
