Mercedes driver George Russell claimed his second victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, June 28, narrowing his championship deficit to teammate Kimi Antonelli to 40 points.
Russell started from pole position after a dramatic qualifying session and held off Max Verstappen and Antonelli, with just two seconds separating the top three finishers at the chequered flag.
The win was Russell's first since the season opener in Australia nearly four months ago, rebounding from a difficult stretch where Antonelli won five consecutive races.
Russell's Resilience Pays Off
"It feels like a long time ago, to be honest," said Russell.
"It's been a tough couple of months with some really tricky races, with races that felt like everything was going against me, then some races with some tough performances."
He acknowledged the challenge of racing against a strong teammate.
"Obviously, I've got a really incredible team-mate next to me, who week in, week out is delivering some pretty spectacular performances."
Russell noted that his recent performances helped rebuild his psychological momentum ahead of the upcoming race at Silverstone.
"The tough races definitely test you psychologically.
And these last two weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself I can do it."
Despite the victory, Russell expressed uncertainty about consistently aligning the vehicle's setup.
"I have less confidence in being able to get everything aligned with the car, the set-up and the tyres, because it's just been so up and down for me."
Wolff's 'Just Drive' Advice
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff revealed that he radioed Russell during qualifying to help him manage the high-pressure environment.
"George, just drive," Wolff said.
Wolff explained that top athletes can enter a cycle of over-analysis when facing DNFs and strong teammates.
"It's such a high-pressure environment that you have a young team-mate and that's your year, and then he's so strong, you have a DNF, you're falling behind."
He emphasized the importance of focusing on core driving metrics. "It's just be in the moment of driving the car.
Don't overthink too much about the strategy, what Kimi's doing.
Drive the car as fast as you can and look at the tyre temperatures and don't burn them."
Antonelli finished third after compromising his starting position by misinterpreting yellow flags in qualifying and running off-track during the opening laps.
"I was struggling with the brakes but after we changed tyre I reset and the pace at the end was very strong," he said.
"It was a shame I joined the party a bit too late."
Verstappen secured second place for Red Bull after recovering from a high-speed qualifying crash caused by an aerodynamic problem.
"To be second and close to a win I think is extremely positive for us," he said.
Ferrari endured a difficult race as Charles Leclerc finished eighth following front-wing damage and early pit stops, while Lewis Hamilton finished fifth.
The 2026 season continues next weekend with a Sprint weekend at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
