Health Canada has approved the country's first generic weight-loss semaglutide injection, Svemia, developed by Canadian manufacturer Apotex.
The drug serves as a generic alternative to Novo Nordisk's brand-name medication Wegovy.
According to official regulatory statements, Svemia is indicated for chronic weight management in individuals aged 12 and older.
The treatment requires a once-weekly injection alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Third Generic Semaglutide Product
This approval represents the third generic semaglutide product authorized by the department.
The initial two variations were approved earlier this year for managing adult Type 2 diabetes rather than weight loss.
Earlier generic approvals included submissions from India-based Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Apotex targeting Ozempic.
Health Canada reported that generic drugs in Canada usually cost 45% to 90% less than brand-name equivalents.
Regulatory reviews are ongoing for six other generic semaglutide submissions from different manufacturers.
Health Canada expects to issue further decisions regarding these complex synthetic treatments in the coming weeks and months.
