Ukrainian forces have seized the initiative along the 1,200-kilometer front line, halting the Russian offensive and reclaiming occupied territories in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region after months of grinding warfare.
Data from the Institute for the Study of War shows that Ukrainian troops pushed invading forces back by approximately 280 square kilometers in May 2026.
Kyiv has liberated more territory in the last two months than Moscow captured during the same period.
Ukrainian military units are now targeting deep Russian logistics and launching large-scale strikes on refineries, including a major operation on June 18, 2026, aimed at choking Russia's war economy.
Military experts note that Russian forces are suffering their worst battlefield stagnation since 2023.
Front-Line Realities and Soldier Accounts
In unnamed front-line villages near heavily damaged Houliaïpole, the 225th Assault Regiment operates. Mobilized soldiers navigate a dangerous 40-kilometer zone monitored by lethal FPV kamikaze drones.
Denis, a wounded logistics soldier from the 225th Assault Regiment, survived a drone strike targeting his supply quad bike.
"It hit hard, but we are alive, in good shape, thank God. We will chop them, kill them to the end!"
he said.
The 42-year-old, who formerly struggled with drug addiction, said frontline logistics soldiers cannot see every breakthrough firsthand, but territorial gains boost morale.
"Knowing we are regaining territories lifts our spirits to continue," Denis added.
He expressed deep exhaustion with the protracted conflict but maintained a firm stance against ceding Ukrainian territory.
"We are tired, we just want it to end once and for all, without giving up our lands.
So many people died for this. Their sacrifice must not be in vain," he said.
Fellow squad member Pavel emphasized the defensive nature of their operations at a hidden field hospital.
"We are not invading a neighbor: we fight for our land, for our brothers in arms, and we will keep advancing again and again," he said.

Ukrainian military expert Oleksandr Kovalenko highlighted massive Russian personnel losses against minimal territorial gains.
"On the rest of the front line, Russian forces are sinking into stagnation, their worst battlefield situation since 2023," he said.
Kovalenko reported that Russia lost nearly 34,000 personnel in May 2026 while seizing less than 20 square kilometers of land, drastically altering the psychological state of defending forces.
"The atmosphere among the troops is electrified by the expectation of something bigger," he added.
However, medical personnel treating casualties offered a somber perspective. Oleksandr, a 44-year-old military doctor in the 225th Regiment, said: "Psychologically, it's hard.
Whether we have the initiative or not, when you see colleagues severely wounded or killed every day, and live with the fear of death, how can you keep good morale?
It's easier to rejoice in gains from a distance, looking at the front line on a map, than to live it from inside."
An anonymous frontline combatant identified only as "M" provided a final assessment: "This is a turning point, with the technological advantage on our side, but victory is far from assured."
