Belgian national team players Leandro Trossard and Youri Tielemans resolved a heated on-field altercation on Thursday after combining to secure a 2-2 equalizer against Senegal during the World Cup round of 16 match.
The dispute erupted in the 70th minute when Belgium trailed 0-2, sparked by Tielemans choosing a poor cross over passing to Trossard.
The confrontation escalated into shouting and pushing, requiring teammates Romelu Lukaku and Nicolas Raskin to separate the two players.
Commentator Filip Joos reflected on the bleak outlook for the national team during the broadcast of the intense moment.
The tension subsided fifteen minutes later when Tielemans headed home the equalizing goal from a Trossard assist, celebrating the moment with a close embrace.
Following the match, Tielemans dismissed the severity of the argument and emphasized their shared competitive drive.
Trossard echoed the sentiment, noting that the disagreement was brief and ultimately productive given the final result.
National team coach Rudi Garcia expressed a positive view of the confrontation, interpreting it as a sign of necessary competitive fire within the squad.
"Het beviel me wel," said Rudi Garcia, Head Coach.
Garcia added that the team had historically lacked aggression during his 18-month tenure despite possessing high technical quality.
The successful comeback sets up the Belgian squad for their upcoming match against the United States.
