This is the agency's most serious health hazard classification.

The recall was initiated voluntarily by manufacturer Utz Quality Foods in May 2026.

It affects specific varieties of the snack brands after potential Salmonella contamination was discovered in the seasoning.

Investigators traced the contamination risk to a dry milk powder ingredient sourced from California Dairies.

That supplier had issued its own recall, which also impacted certain Ghirardelli powdered beverage mixes.

A Class I recall means there is a reasonable probability that exposure to the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

Salmonella infections can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms typically include fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can lead to bloodstream infections, endocarditis, or arthritis.

The recall covers multiple sizes of Zapp's Bayou Blackened Ranch, Salt and Vinegar, and Big Cheezy varieties.

Also affected are Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream and Onion potato chips.
