A brush fire that ignited near Slate Canyon in Provo, Utah, on Saturday night burned approximately five acres before crews contained it early Sunday morning.
The fire broke out below the Bonneville Shoreline Trail around 10:40 p. m.
on July 4, 2026, according to local reports.
The Provo Fire Department responded quickly and requested additional resources from Utah County to help stop the flames from spreading.
The fire was visible across much of the city, including from the Stadium of Fire event at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
It started over a half-acre area and expanded south of Y Mountain and north of the site of the 2025 Buckley Fire.
By 12:30 a. m.
Sunday, visible flames were suppressed, and crews focused on extinguishing remaining hot spots.
Provo Fire Captain Jeanie Atherton said weather conditions helped prevent the fire from advancing toward nearby homes.
“Tonight, we had favorable conditions,” Atherton said. “We don’t have very much wind.
If we had a really strong wind from the west, that would be bad.”
Officials are still investigating the exact cause of the fire, but social media video showed fireworks near the canyon that evening.
“We will get a hold of it and definitely pursue that,” Atherton said.
No injuries were reported, and no residential evacuations were ordered.
The Provo Police Department asked the public to avoid Slate Canyon Drive and refrain from flying drones near the active zone.
