A prolonged and severe heatwave has gripped large swaths of China, triggering dangerous snowmelt floods in the Xinjiang region as surface temperatures reached extreme heights on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
According to reports from the National Meteorological Center and CCTV, a massive "heat dome" high-pressure system has trapped heat across northwest China, southern North China, and the Huanghuai region.

In the Turpan Basin, air temperatures were forecast to climb between 50°C and 52°C, approaching the national record of 52.2°C, while the Flaming Mountains recorded unprecedented ground heat.
"The 84 degrees Celsius we measured recently is the highest surface temperature recorded since the beginning of summer this year.
The highest surface temperature ever recorded at the scenic area is 89 degrees Celsius," said Lan Yunxia, marketing manager of the Flaming Mountains Scenic Area.
Lan Yunxia noted that the extreme heat stems from Turpan's closed basin topography, bare rock surfaces, and long sunshine hours.
Snowmelt Floods and Response
The sustained high temperatures have caused rapid snowmelt in the Kunlun Mountains, triggering localized floods in Qiemo County that washed away Gobi Desert roads.

Local authorities deployed heavy machinery to repair roads and clear mud while conducting safety outreach to nearby residents.
Instructive campaigns focused on preparation for sudden flash floods during the low-lying region's annual flood season.
"They taught us a lot about safety, like carrying ropes and food in the car to prevent being stranded in the wilderness.
They also told us to promptly help anyone we encounter in trouble outdoors," said a local herder in the town.
The National Meteorological Center predicted four major heatwaves throughout July, with deputy director Huang Zhuo advising residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and monitor health alerts.
