Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the British Grand Prix on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Silverstone after winning the weekend sprint race.
The 19-year-old championship leader outpaced Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.175 seconds to secure his fifth pole of the season.
Button Praises Engineer Partnership
Former Formula 1 champion Jenson Button highlighted the calming impact of race engineer Peter Bonnington as an essential element behind the teenager's dominant performances.
"That was amazing, really impressive. It feels like nothing fazes him," said Button.
Button noted that the engineering partnership has played a vital role in accelerating the championship leader's rapid development.
"With the management of Toto and Bono, his engineer, it's helped him grow in the sport," said Button.
Bonnington previously guided both Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton during their respective tenures at Mercedes.
"Bono is a very calming character.
Kimi, at times, this year has got very excited on the radio during a race, but Bono is the calming voice that brings him back down to earth," said Button.
Button further raised questions regarding the car setup moving away from George Russell's preferences, suggesting Russell needs to explore alternative technical directions.
"I think people don't understand how important the relationship is between an engineer and a driver," said Button.
According to Button, the strong rapport shared between Antonelli and Bonnington mimics the successful partnerships seen during Hamilton's championship-winning seasons.
"Yes, I do think Bono is a really good influence on Kimi. They obviously have a good rapport, like Lewis and Bono did," said Button.
Button suggested that Russell must quickly find a setup solution to keep pace with his teenage teammate.
"It does feel that the car has gone a little bit away from what George's style requires," said Button.
The former driver emphasized that contrasting driving styles mandate unique engineering approaches.
"Their driving style is completely different, so you need to try other things if you want to get the best out of the car for your style of driving," said Button.
Button stated that both drivers must quickly adapt as the season moves further into the competitive European leg.
"So we'll see that, also we'll see them both adapt through the season to see what works for them.
It just needs to be done pretty quickly," said Button.
Wolff and Brundle Weigh In
During a post-qualifying exchange, Button asked Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff about the driver's apparent lack of weaknesses across different circuits.
"We all have bogey tracks, except for Kimi; why is that?" said Button.
Sky Sports F1 analyst Martin Brundle observed that Antonelli appears increasingly comfortable managing his position at the top of the standings.
"Antonelli's looking ever more comfortable as championship leader," said Brundle.
Brundle noted that feeling highly valued within a team environment directly influences a driver's baseline on-track performance.
"Mercedes is like a second family to him and that matters a lot - when you feel really valued in your team," said Brundle.
The commentator reflected on how his own historical driving experiences mirrored these psychological dynamics.
"I had both experiences of that and it dramatically affected my performance," said Brundle.
Wolff responded to Button's observations by urging a focus on the broader development path for the young Italian star.
"You did pretty well, you’re a world champion, he hasn’t won the world championship yet, we need to consider the big picture," said Wolff.
Reflecting on the final Q3 session, Antonelli admitted to experiencing pressure before executing his pole-winning lap under unpredictable track conditions.
"A bit stressed because I never like going first for the last run! The last lap was very tidy.
It was very tricky with the wind because it was very gusty and unpredictable," said Antonelli.
The British Grand Prix is scheduled to commence at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 5, 2026, with Leclerc joining Antonelli on the front row of the grid.
