Novak Djokovic staged a comeback to win the opening set against Roman Safiullin in their Wimbledon match on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

The seventh seed secured the set 8-6 in a tiebreak after one hour and two minutes of play, according to TNT Sports.

Safiullin, ranked 132nd in the world, started aggressively and broke Djokovic's serve twice.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion struggled with the sun on Centre Court, double-faulting to give the Russian an early lead.

Despite having two set points, Safiullin could not close out the opener.

Djokovic broke back to level the score and then used clutch serves and serve-and-volley plays in the tiebreak to take the set.

The match comes after a day of major upsets at Wimbledon, including defending champion Iga Swiatek's loss to Alexandra Eala.
