Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban stated on June 25, 2026, that growing public opposition toward technological data centers represents a broader social backlash against artificial intelligence and concentrated billionaire wealth rather than simple infrastructure disputes.

A YouGov survey indicates that approximately three-quarters of Americans across political lines desire tighter regulations on the technology.
The physical infrastructure required to train large language models strains local power grids, increases utility costs, and drives high water consumption for cooling.
This sparks localized resistance that tech executives often misinterpret as minor permitting disagreements.
In a public statement on the social media platform X, Cuban shared his assessment of the growing pushback against corporate technology hubs.
"It's time for everyone to realize that the fight against data centers has nothing to do with data centers.
They have become a proxy for the hate towards AI and the concentration and accumulation of wealth it's creating," wrote Cuban.
Cuban warned that legal and political maneuvers would fail to solve the systemic public relations issues facing major technology firms.
"This battle is only going to get more intense and let me tell you now, no matter how much money you pay to buy politicians and races, you will lose," added Cuban.
To mitigate the risk of severe public backlash, Cuban suggested that artificial intelligence firms donate billions of dollars to local municipalities, cooperate with creative unions, and stop hiring celebrity endorsers.
