FIFA has dismissed an emergency appeal by the Royal Belgian Football Association (KBVB) regarding the eligibility of United States striker Folarin Balogun.

The ruling, issued on July 6, 2026, clears Balogun to play against Belgium in the upcoming World Cup match despite a previous red card.

The decision drew sharp criticism from Sporza analyst Peter Vandenbempt.

He noted that the Belgian association was forced to appeal without receiving the official justification or referee report.

Vandenbempt expressed deep skepticism about the ruling and the integrity of the tournament's organizing bodies.

"The integrity and credibility of the World Cup are being severely damaged here," he stated.

The analyst highlighted that the procedural setup left little room for a reversal. "There was already no hope that this decision would be overturned," he observed.

He also commented on the composition of the dispute committee.

"A kind of appeals committee was set up to oversee the decision – not coincidentally a Qatari, while it is known that Infantino is close with Qatar," Vandenbempt added.

The legal process was heavily criticized for lacking transparency. "It is actually a big farce.

If you know that the Belgians had to appeal against a decision for which they never received the reasoning, and thus cannot counter the arguments against that decision," he argued.

Vandenbempt characterized FIFA's communication as dismissive. "This is a mockery of the rights of defense.

This is only possible at FIFA. The way they almost arrogantly answer the association is hallucinatory," he said.

The decision has generated widespread astonishment outside the United States. "You could say that everyone is looking at this decision with bewilderment.

Yet we are already used to some things from FIFA," Vandenbempt sighed.

He warned that the decision impacts the broader reputation of international football. "This puts the credibility of FIFA at a dead end.

The integrity and credibility of football and the World Cup are also being severely damaged," he explained.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino released a statement defending the decision and downplaying external political pressure.

"Maybe Infantino has crossed a threshold here and it could be his death blow, but he has already issued a statement saying that Donald Trump's influence was minimal," Vandenbempt detailed.

The analyst described the ruling as a direct insult to football supporters globally.

"This is another slap in the face and a middle finger to everyone who cares about football," he stated.

While the KBVB continues to formally contest Balogun's eligibility for legal reasons, Vandenbempt urged the team to focus on the pitch.

"The Belgian football association will see what is possible after the match, but that he will play is now certain," he noted.

He emphasized that players must separate sport from ongoing administrative disputes.

"As for the players, they just have to focus on football and not get involved in political matters," Vandenbempt advised.

According to the commentator, securing a victory remains the definitive response available to the team. "The Belgians can now only play football and achieve a resounding victory there.

That would be the best revenge they can get. Because nothing more can be done against this decision," he concluded.
