Belgium secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals by defeating tournament co-hosts United States 4-1 on Monday night at Lumen Field in Seattle.

The victory sets up a last-eight matchup against Spain this Friday in Los Angeles.

Charles De Ketelaere led the Belgian attack with two goals, opening the scoring in the ninth minute by converting a cross from Nicolas Raskin.

The United States briefly responded when Malik Tillman scored from a heavily deflected free-kick.

De Ketelaere restored the Belgian lead two minutes later with a header.

The American defense collapsed further in the second half following a major mistake by goalkeeper Matt Freese, which allowed Hans Vanaken to score from long range.

Substitute Romelu Lukaku added a fourth goal for Belgium deep into stoppage time from a tight angle.

The defeat marks the exit of the final remaining co-host nation from the tournament, following the earlier eliminations of Mexico and Canada.

Belgium now prepares to face Spain in the next round.
