England advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, July 5, after defeating tournament co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Manager Thomas Tuchel's side overcame a hostile atmosphere, altitude challenges, and a second-half red card to secure the victory.

Right-back Jarell Quansah was sent off for a late sliding tackle on Jesus Gallardo, reducing England to 10 men.
Tuchel implemented a phased, five-part tactical strategy to withstand Mexico's home pressure.
Assistant coach Anthony Barry confirmed the structured approach at half-time, noting that England deliberately slowed their recovery time.
The team took 37 seconds to regain possession, compared to their previous tournament average of 12.1 seconds.
"We prepared the players that up until the first water break it would be a difficult game," Barry said.
England used an adjusted pressing system featuring Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham to cut off defensive passing lines.
This was a notable adjustment from their round of 32 match against DR Congo.
"We are fully committed to our press," Tuchel said.
The visitors took control late in the first half when goalkeeper Jordan Pickford assisted Declan Rice, who connected with Bukayo Saka to set up a header from Bellingham.

Bellingham scored a second goal immediately after the restart following a midfield recovery by Elliot Anderson.
After Quansah's red card, Tuchel adjusted by introducing John Stones, Dan Burn, and Djed Spence.
