Every early model of the new BMW X5 will arrive with a mandatory slate interior trim, and buyers cannot opt out until December.

The option, called Individual Clear & Bold, costs €950 ($1,085) and includes a thin piece of genuine slate on the center console.

No Choice for Early Adopters

BMW's online configurator shows that every X5 built before December must be ordered with the Individual Clear & Bold package.

The slate trim sits around the redesigned shifter and is said to be the first production use of genuine slate in a car.

Crystal glass switches for seat controls on the door panels and center console are also included.

BMW will start building X5 models without the slate option from December, giving reluctant buyers a date to wait for.

The price of the trim represents about 1 percent of the base X5's starting price of €95,750 ($109,500) in Germany.

Powertrain Options

The new X5 offers a range of powertrains, including a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 394 hp, two plug-in hybrids, and an all-electric iX5.

The X5 50e AWD delivers 483 hp and 516 lb-ft, while the M60e produces 612 hp and 590 lb-ft.

The iX5 has 570 hp and 593 lb-ft. V8 and hydrogen models are planned for the future.
