The Philadelphia 76ers have officially signed free-agent forward LeBron James to a two-year contract, the team announced Monday, July 27.
The deal is worth $8 million and includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, along with a 15% trade kicker.
James initially announced his decision to join the 76ers on Friday, July 24. ESPN reported the contract agreement on Sunday, July 26.
Team Executives Praise Addition
Mike Gansey, newly appointed president of basketball operations, expressed enthusiasm in a team release.
Gansey previously faced James in high school basketball in Ohio before moving from his role as Cavaliers general manager in late May.
"There is no doubt LeBron is one of the greatest players to ever play the game of basketball, and there are no words to measure the impact he'll have on this organization," Gansey said.
He noted that he has known James since high school and witnessed his impact at every stage.
Gansey highlighted James' professionalism, competitiveness, and leadership. "He is a consummate professional, the ultimate competitor, and a tireless worker.
But he is also an incredible person with natural leadership traits, a family man, and someone who possesses unwavering commitment to community and those around him," Gansey added.
Managing partner Josh Harris also welcomed James, calling him "one of the greatest players in NBA history and one of the best athletes ever."
Harris listed James' accomplishments: four-time NBA champion, four-time NBA MVP, four-time Finals MVP, three-time Olympic gold medalist, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, a record 22 All-Star selections, and 21 All-NBA selections.
Harris pointed to the team's outlook with James joining a roster that includes Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey.
"I cannot wait to see LeBron alongside ... our talented roster as we work to deliver a championship for Philly," Harris said.
James' Decision Process
According to agent Rich Paul on his "Game Over" podcast on July 24, the final list of potential destinations included the 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors.
Paul noted that the decision was finalized in the early morning hours of July 24.
In public statements on July 24, James shared that his choice was guided by a desire to pursue another title.
"I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team," James stated, emphasizing his focus on "a chance at the feeling of winning another championship."
