Nunspeet Mayor Céline Blom publicly condemned arson committed during local agricultural demonstrations on Monday night, following protests against federal nitrogen restrictions across Gelderland.
Demonstrators set fire to roundabout greenery using gasoline, while local authorities reported zero arrests during the demonstrations.
Protesters blocked the intersection connecting Nijverheidsweg and the N310 in Nunspeet, setting fire to vegetation on the roundabout using gasoline, according to eyewitness reports.
Nearby in Emst, emergency crews extinguished two fire barrels stationed on the Kanaalweg overpass above the A50 motorway.
The demonstrations stem from national government mandates requiring farmers to cut nitrogen emissions by over 40 percent by 2035.
The policy establishes strict environmental buffer zones around heavily burdened nature reserves, capping dairy farm density at 2.6 cows per hectare and forcing regional agricultural operations to innovate, downscale, relocate, or close.
Mayor Céline Blom acknowledged the ongoing sector struggles while denouncing the destructive tactics employed during the Monday evening actions.
"Farmers expressed their concerns about the nitrogen package. I understand that," said Mayor Céline Blom.
"They have been dealing with changing policies and uncertainty about the future for years.
There is now a package of measures to speed up the nitrogen file, take the Netherlands off the nitrogen lock, and give farmers more clarity.
Hard work is being done on solutions."
She emphasized that violent property destruction crosses acceptable legal boundaries despite the constitutional protection granted to public demonstrations.
"Demonstrating for a cause is a proper right in the Netherlands and we must be careful with that.
I also understand the concerns. But last night's destruction and arson do not fit a demonstration and we condemn them.
We have a lot of understanding for the fact that they demonstrate, but it must happen within certain limits.
And arson, especially at this time, is not wise," said Blom.
Municipal leadership expressed an ongoing desire to re-engage in formal dialogue directly with local agricultural operators regarding the policy implementation.
"We understand the concerns of farmers.
We experience that we stand alongside our farmers and would very much like to get in touch with them," said Blom.
Regional law enforcement personnel monitored traffic flow on major arteries, including a tractor demonstration on the A28 motorway near Zwolle, choosing not to detain any participating protesters.
"Our focus was on traffic safety and restoring the flow of other traffic," said a police spokesperson.
Separately, the Council of State dismissed legal objections raised by citizen group Helder Nunspeet regarding a long-standing residential construction dispute on Veelhorsterweg, ruling that municipal authorities acted within legal discretion despite earlier procedural oversights.
