The New York Mets are expected to trade starting pitchers Clay Holmes and Freddy Peralta ahead of Major League Baseball's trade deadline on August 3, 2026.
The last-place club has positioned itself as a major seller.
Interim manager Andy Green said Peralta will likely start Friday against the Marlins unless traded beforehand.
Holmes completed a four-inning rehab assignment with Single-A St. Lucie earlier in the week following a mid-May fractured right fibula.
Green stated that the team acknowledges a decision must be made regarding a potential Sunday start for Holmes before the deadline.
"We will continue to evaluate that as we get closer to the Deadline," Green said.
"Obviously, anybody can count out to figure out where five days is from now, and it's Sunday before the Deadline.
So [we] acknowledge that there's a decision to be made around that. We'll partner with him in making that decision.
We'll have to wait until he gets past his bullpen regardless to make a declaration of what's next."
Holmes, who signed a two-year, $26 million contract with the Mets before the 2025 season, holds a 2.39 ERA across nine starts this year.
He has drawn scouting interest from seven teams, including the Yankees and Dodgers.
Addressing his status with the team, Holmes reflected on his tenure in New York.
"I've stated how I feel about the Mets -- just grateful for the opportunity here and guys in this clubhouse, getting to play with them and what this organization is," Holmes said.
"As a player you want to leave this place better than you found it. What that looks like, I don't really know.
But I have to do all I can to make sure that no matter what happens, hopefully things are better here when I leave -- whenever that is."
Meanwhile, Peralta has struggled with a 7.34 ERA over his past nine outings. Rival evaluators indicate the Mets could still acquire a top-30 prospect in return.
Acknowledging his recent struggles, Peralta addressed his future following his last start.
"I know it probably is," Peralta said when asked if it was his final start for the Mets.
Peralta further expressed his desire to maintain focus despite his current performance.
"I have to focus and keep giving the best of myself," Peralta said. "If it happens, it happens.
I'm thankful and grateful to be part of this organization. I know so far I've let them down.
I haven't done what I was supposed to do."
Beyond Holmes and Peralta, trade discussions have also touched on catchers Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens as rival clubs seek catching depth across the league.
