Mirko Lombardi, a former Lombardy regional councillor and prominent left-wing political figure, died on July 30, 2026, at the age of 76.
He passed away in Brescia, Italy, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on April 22, 1950, Lombardi served as a Brescia municipal councillor from 1985 to 1995.
He then represented the Lombardy regional council for two terms, from 1995 to 2005.
An architect and urban planning expert, Lombardi previously worked as a municipal technician in Lonato del Garda.
He also co-founded the Brescia branch of the Sunia Cgil housing union.
Throughout his political career, Lombardi held leadership roles within the Italian Communist Party (PCI), Rifondazione Comunista, and Sinistra Ecologia Libertà.
He served on the board of Aler Brescia until 2014 and co-founded the Ripensare il Mondo association. In 2021, he joined the board of the Luigi Micheletti Foundation.
Brescia Mayor Laura Castelletti expressed grief on behalf of the municipal administration. "It is a great loss for Brescia," she said.
Castelletti highlighted their shared political journey, noting their history of collaboration on civic issues despite starting on opposing sides.
"With him, there was never a lack of loyal and direct confrontation, always based on solid arguments and a genuine passion for the ideas he believed in," she added.
The mayor also acknowledged his continued dedication to civic affairs after retiring from elective office, specifically citing his involvement with the Associazione Filarmonica Banda Cittadina "Isidoro Capitanio".
"Culture and social issues were the common thread of his human and political journey. This is the most precious legacy he leaves to Brescia," she concluded.
Emanuele Moraschini, President of the Province of Brescia, also paid tribute to Lombardi's four decades of public service.
"The passing of Mirko Lombardi represents a significant moment for our territory.
He was a competent administrator, with deep knowledge of urban planning and environmental issues, and an interlocutor always attentive to the dynamics of the city and province," Moraschini said.
Rifondazione Comunista released a statement mourning their former national leader, praising his lifelong dedication to political, environmental, and housing rights initiatives.
Lombardi spent his final months following the passing of his wife, Rosanna Affò, in June 2026.
A secular funeral service is scheduled for August 1, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Sant'Eufemia cremation temple in Brescia.
