The Algerabrug, connecting Capelle and Krimpen aan den IJssel, will be fully closed for four weeks starting August 10, 2026, for major maintenance.

The closure is expected to cause significant financial losses and lengthy detours for local businesses.

Rijkswaterstaat reduced the maintenance window from six to four weeks and added ferry services, extra bicycle parking, and a temporary pedestrian and bicycle bridge.

However, motorized traffic must detour via the N10 through Gouda.

The bridge is a vital artery, carrying about 47,000 vehicles and 7,600 cyclists daily between Krimpenerwaard, Capelle aan den IJssel, and Rotterdam.

Residents and Businesses Brace for Impact

Corry, a 74-year-old local resident, has temporarily canceled her volunteer work at Blijdorp zoo as a precaution.

"Everyone is very negative about the closure, but maintenance has to be carried out. I think it will all not be so bad in the end," she said.

Her husband Joop, 75, an on-call driver for Zuid-West Transport, worries about extra travel time.

"I will soon have to drive around for at least an hour extra and I am afraid that additional time will be added due to delays.

That is especially bad for the boss, who incurs extra costs. While the customers pay nothing extra," he said.

Martijn Robbemond, manager at a bed specialty store near the bridgehead, expects a sharp drop in foot traffic and revenue.

"I hold my heart," he said. He noted that qualifying for compensation requires five years of historical data, making immediate recovery difficult.

"As a result, we are already warning customers on the website and via social media about the closure.

We mainly want to emphasize that we are not closed. If necessary, we will give a detour discount.

But to be honest: you don't take away the extra travel time with that," Robbemond added.

Bas Slob, owner of technical wholesaler S&D at the Stormpolder business park, criticized remote work suggestions as impractical.

"Then they say: work from home as much as possible. But what do you do as an entrepreneur with a warehouse?

My shed is not that big, you know. And how should welders, mechanics, or drivers do that?

They cannot do that work from their living room," he said.

Slob warned that delayed deliveries could drive customers to competitors. "If someone needs grinding discs or fastening materials, it has to be delivered today.

If we cannot do that, the customer goes to someone else. Maybe they like that so much that they don't return.

That risk is much harder to calculate than just the extra fuel or travel time," he said.

He is considering courier options, but fears they will also face traffic jams. "But I fear that they will also be stuck in traffic jams later.

You are only shifting the problem," Slob said.

Despite challenges, he pointed to resilience: "We have been in existence for 25 years, we have loyal customers.

We also survived the coronavirus period."

Neighboring firm Van der Jagt Groep, which deploys 20 service vans and heavy machinery daily, faces larger disruption.

Sales manager Erik Koelewijn said they created a temporary secondary depot and moved heavy equipment to Zeeland to mitigate delays.

"While many of those costs are not covered by the compensation scheme. But we do everything we can to accommodate our customers and staff.

As an entrepreneur, you also have to take responsibility yourself," Koelewijn said. He also expressed concern about emergency access on the main detour along the N210 to Bergambacht.

"The N210 to Bergambacht will soon be the only serious route. If an accident happens there, we are trapped like rats.

Emergency services will also suffer from that," he said.

Dylan Vuik of Vuik Logistics in Lekkerkerk noted that his firm must hire additional staff and dispatch an extra truck to maintain service levels in Rotterdam during the closure.
