Mercedes-AMG has introduced a new entry-level variant of its electric GT 4-Door Coupe, the GT 53, which offers a more accessible price point while retaining the model's distinctive design and luxury features.
Slotting below the high-performance GT 55 and GT 63 models, the GT 53 trades one electric motor for a friendlier price and a longer driving range.
It targets the Porsche Taycan 4S, offering a compelling alternative in the electric performance sedan segment.
Performance and Range
The GT 53 is powered by two Yasa axial flux motors, delivering a combined output of 536 hp (544 PS / 400 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.
This enables a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 3.9 seconds, or 3.5 seconds with 1 foot of rollout.
Despite having two motors instead of three, the GT 53 retains all-wheel drive, torque vectoring, and the adaptive air suspension found in its more powerful siblings.
The top speed is electronically limited to 143 mph (230 km/h), but an optional AMG Driver's Package raises it to 155 mph (250 km/h).
Mercedes has retained the 106 kWh usable battery pack and 800-volt architecture.
The removal of the third motor improves efficiency, boosting the official WLTP range to 503 miles (809 km), up from the 55 and 63's 435 miles (700 km).
DC fast charging peaks at 600 kW, allowing for over 331 miles (534 km) of range to be added in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions.
Sound and Interior
Instead of the simulated V8 soundtrack of the GT 63, the GT 53 mimics the character of AMG's old turbocharged inline-six engine.
Mercedes recorded the real engine in detail to recreate its sound digitally. Simulated gearshifts remain, complete with paddle-operated manual changes for those who miss combustion engines.
Inside, the GT 53 offers a 14-inch central display, an optional passenger screen, sporty seating, and AMG's Response Control system, which allows independent tailoring of powertrain responses.
The GT 53 is priced at €115,430, undercutting the €122,000 Taycan 4S and offering a more accessible entry point into the AMG GT lineup.
It delivers much of the same style and performance as its higher-priced siblings, making it an attractive option for those seeking an electric luxury sedan.
