Great Wall Motors has revealed the Tank 300 Hooke Trail, a new special edition built for extreme off-roading and rock crawling.
The headline change is a dual live-axle configuration that replaces the standard model's independent double-wishbone front suspension.
The variant is based on the extended-wheelbase Tank 300L, which has a 3,010 mm wheelbase and a shorter front overhang.
The regular short-wheelbase Tank 300, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, remains on sale.
The Hooke Trail takes its name from a popular off-road destination in the Helan Mountains, near the border between Ningxia and Inner Mongolia.
Chassis and Off-Road Hardware
The ladder-frame chassis gains a new solid front axle with 80 mm housing tubes, reinforced control arms, a Panhard rod with heavy-duty bushings, and solid tie rods.
GWM claims the upgrades increase suspension rigidity by 38%.
Standard equipment includes electro-hydraulic power steering, a Multi-Terrain Select system, and a semi-active electronic anti-roll bar disconnect that enables over 500 mm of wheel articulation.
GWM lists a 41-degree approach angle, a 34-degree departure angle, 245 mm of ground clearance, and an 850 mm wading depth.
The suspension setup can clear 35-inch tires, or even 40-inch rubber with a few modifications.
Visually, the Hooke Trail is set apart by a snorkel intake and special decals on the profile.
It also adopts the rugged bumpers and blacked-out grille of the 300L, and offers the same optional accessories such as a rooftop tent, a refrigerator, and extra LEDs.
Inside, equipment includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a free-standing 15.6-inch infotainment display, heated, ventilated, and massaging seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and a comprehensive ADAS suite.
Powertrain and Availability
The Hooke Trail is fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 228 hp and 400 Nm of torque.
Power reaches all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission, a part-time 4WD system with front, center, and rear locking differentials, and a two-speed transfer case.
Documents from China's MIIT indicate a more potent turbo 3.0-liter V6 option will be offered in the future.
GWM is accepting pre-orders in China ahead of a market launch scheduled for September 20, with official pricing to be announced at the launch event.
The Tank 300 is exported to Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, the Middle East, and Russia, though it remains unclear whether the live-axle variant will be sold outside China.
