Hyundai will launch its next-generation driver-assistance system before the end of the decade, roughly two years behind its initial schedule.
The proprietary system will not be entirely in-house. It will use technology co-designed with Nvidia, according to Hyundai executive Park Min-win.
Data from the Nvidia technology will be used to train and refine Hyundai's Atria software platform.
Rollout Timeline and Technology
Production vehicles with Hyundai's latest Level 2+ systems will launch in the first half of 2028.
Level 2++ models will start production in the second half of 2028.
Hyundai's Atria end-to-end autonomous driving system will then go into production as a Level 2++ system in the second half of 2029.
The next-generation system will use Nvidia's Hyperion 10 platform and rely on cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar.
Further in the future, the setup could add an advanced LiDAR sensor to enable advanced Level 3 autonomous driving functions, including hands-off driving in specific conditions.
Hyundai is deepening its ties with Nvidia after Park, a former executive at the chip maker, joined the car manufacturer at the start of this year.
Hyundai appears to be following Tesla's lead by harvesting data from its global fleet, including from Kia and Genesis brands, to train its autonomous driving systems.
Although the company is behind its initial schedule, Hyundai says it will surpass many competitors in accumulated driving data by 2033, thanks to its annual fleet of more than 7 million new vehicles.
Importantly, Hyundai won't hand over the reins to Nvidia and use an off-the-shelf software and hardware stack.
According to Park, "Our partnership with Nvidia is not about leaving our destiny entirely in their hands."
