Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Paul van Hecke has withdrawn from the Netherlands national team squad after picking up a foot injury during a UEFA Nations League fixture against Serbia.

The 26-year-old centre-back was hurt in the Dutch side's 2-1 victory on Sunday.

He tried to train on Wednesday morning to stay available for international duty, but lingering discomfort forced him to leave the session early and return to North London.

The Royal Dutch Football Association confirmed that Van Hecke will miss Thursday night's match against Greece in Thessaloniki.

The Netherlands head coach opted not to call up a replacement, trimming the travelling squad to 23 players before the final scheduled fixture against Serbia in Eindhoven on October 4.

Growing Absences for the Dutch Side

Van Hecke's departure adds to a lengthening list of absences for the Netherlands during the current international window.

He joins Donnyell Malen, Justin Kluivert, Brian Brobbey, Luuk de Jong, and Cody Gakpo on the sidelines.

Xavi Simons, meanwhile, has rejoined the senior group after a stint with the Under-21 team.

The setback is also a tactical concern for Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi ahead of a Premier League fixture against Manchester United on October 10.

Van Hecke, who joined Spurs from Brighton during the summer transfer window, has started every Premier League match this season, recording six total appearances and scoring one goal.

Tottenham sit near the bottom of the Premier League standings with two points from five matches.

The North London club face a demanding October schedule that includes fixtures against Manchester United, Coventry City in the domestic cup, and Chelsea.
