M4 Westbound Shut in Wiltshire After HGV Hits Central Barrier

The M4 westbound in Wiltshire is closed between Junction 16 near Swindon and Junction 17 near Chippenham after a heavy goods vehicle struck the central reservation early Thursday morning.

National Highways reported the collision, which happened around 2:11 a. m.

and left the vehicle resting inside the barrier structure.

The impact caused extensive damage to approximately 300 meters of the central barrier.

Lane three of the eastbound carriageway was also closed as a result.

Diesel Spill and Traffic Disruption

A major diesel spillage spread across at least 100 meters of the westbound lanes.

Trapped traffic backed up over a mile behind the scene, leaving some motorists stranded for hours.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that no injuries were reported from the collision.

Police officers and National Highways traffic personnel began turning trapped vehicles around from the rear of the queue while recovery crews arrived at the scene.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "Please be aware that the M4 is currently closed in both directions, between junction 16 and 17, due to a road traffic collision."

Authorities advised drivers to expect continued morning peak delays and to follow official diversions using the A3102, B4042, and A429 for standard vehicles, or the A4 and A350 for vehicles taller than 4.2 meters.
