Restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson has formally requested a trade from the Detroit Red Wings, according to a report by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman on Saturday night.
The request follows a prolonged contract stalemate that has left the 23-year-old blueliner without a new deal.
Edvinsson became a restricted free agent on July 1 and initially attended training camp in good faith.
After negotiations stalled, he returned home to Sweden to skate with his former club, Frolunda HC, while his agent and the team stopped active communication.
Because Edvinsson remains under restricted free agency status, he lacks no-trade clause protections to specify potential destinations.
All trade options therefore remain under the control of Detroit's management.
Leadership Void and Roster Instability
The impasse comes during an ongoing leadership void for the Red Wings.
Former general manager Steve Yzerman stepped down on July 15, and the franchise named Shawn Horcoff as interim general manager on September 15 while continuing its search for a permanent executive.
Edvinsson's trade request adds to growing roster instability in Detroit.
Longtime captain Dylan Larkin previously requested a trade on June 4, though the ongoing managerial transition has slowed efforts to relocate either player.
During the 2025-26 season, Edvinsson recorded nine goals, 25 points, 94 hits, and a plus-12 rating over 72 games for Detroit, following a 31-point campaign in 2024-25.
The trade preference has prompted outside interest across the league, with the Boston Bruins emerging as a potential suitor seeking a top-four left-shot defender to pair alongside Charlie McAvoy.
Despite the player's preference to depart, Sportsnet reported that Detroit management has communicated to rival clubs that re-signing the young defenseman remains their primary objective.
