A falling tree killed one person and trapped another inside a home on Monterey Drive in east Birmingham early Saturday as the weakened Isaias storm moved across Alabama.

Firefighters rescued the second person, who was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization, according to Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Chief Cory Moon.

Birmingham firefighters and police responded shortly after 5 a. m.

to the home in the 1300 block of Monterey Drive, near Edwards Lake Road.

According to the emergency call, two people were trapped inside, and the fallen tree obscured much of the house from the road.

A power line had also fallen onto the home, adding to the hazards facing emergency responders.

Initial reports indicated that one victim had fallen through the floor while the other was pinned beneath the tree.

Fire crews managed to free one person, who received treatment at the scene without needing hospital care, Moon said.

The second victim was found dead in a bedroom.

Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Coker said the incident accounted for the county's only reported injuries and fatality following the overnight storms.

The county experienced scattered damage as the weather system passed through the area.

The National Weather Service warned that Isaias could continue bringing periods of heavy rain to Alabama on Saturday, particularly across the northern and central parts of the state.

Wind gusts could reach 50 mph, the agency said.
