Alexander Bublik defeated Brandon Nakashima of the United States at the 2026 Shanghai Masters after a third-round match marked by a racket-smashing incident and a self-inflicted injury during his emotional reaction to losing the opening set.

The 29-year-old Kazakh lost the first-set tiebreak after failing to convert two set points.

He then damaged his racket, kicked his chair and struck a cooler beside his bench.

Bublik received a medical timeout after noticing damage to his hand but returned to the court. He later completed a comeback victory, winning 6-7(7-9), 6-3, 7-6(5).

One tennis fan on Reddit criticized Bublik's reaction after the incident.

"This is just crazy behavior, and if he had gotten a more serious injury, he would have nobody to blame but himself.

I can only imagine the reactions if someone like Zverev had done this," said a tennis fan.

Bublik entered the tournament as the No. 19 seed and reached the fourth round after previously defeating Tomas Machac of Czechia in straight sets, according to sports.

Wuhan Open Media Day: Sabalenka, Pegula, Swiatek Speak

At the Wuhan Open media day, Aryna Sabalenka discussed returning to a tournament where she has previously achieved success.

WTA Tennis reported that the event's main draw began on October 12.

"I'm happy to see her healthy, happy to see her playing her tennis -- making a good run at US Open and playing the final in Beijing.

It's amazing to see her get back on her level. That's definitely not an easy draw, but I'm ready for it," said Aryna Sabalenka.

Sabalenka also reflected on her connection with Wuhan, where she has won three titles, according to WTA Tennis.

"I feel when you come to the place where you have a lot of success, you feel different.

You feel at home. you feel comfortable with the conditions and with everything here.

I definitely feel warm here in Wuhan," said Aryna Sabalenka.

Jessica Pegula spoke about her career milestones and her return to Wuhan while preparing for the final stretch of the season, according to WTA Tennis.

"There's probably a few. Making finals of a Grand Slam is always the most exciting.

It was just really pivotal, and on paper, the coolest thing I've done. Cracking the top 10 in the world was a big moment for me.

I didn't think it would necessarily be possible. That was such a big year for me to break into the top 10," said Jessica Pegula.

Pegula also explained her decision to compete at another WTA 1000 event before the WTA Finals qualification race concluded.

"I wanted to come to Wuhan because I've had good results here before. I had good results here last year.

It's important to try and play matches before WTA Finals. Competing in another WTA 1000 is always a good time to win the tournament.

For me, I didn't necessarily want to skip Beijing so coming back to Wuhan was something I always planned to do," said Jessica Pegula.

Iga Swiatek addressed her WTA Finals qualification situation and her transition from Beijing to Wuhan, according to WTA Tennis.

"Obviously, I'm aware of the situation. It would be great to get into the finals, for sure it's our goal.

It's the first time I faced a situation like this to get into the finals, so it's a challenge, but it's a really positive one.

I'm really motivated," said Iga Swiatek.

Swiatek added that adapting to quick travel and match changes was part of the challenge during the Asian swing.

"That's not going to be a problem. We're kind of used to short turnarounds, traveling from place to place.

I already analyzed the match against Elise [Mertens]. I have no regrets, she played great and I feel it was a good level match.

Now I'm here, so I need to focus on the next challenges," said Iga Swiatek.
