The Wuhan Open begins October 12 in China, featuring a WTA 1000 tournament that runs through October 18.
World No. 18 Alex Eala enters as the 13th seed, while Leylah Fernandez and Ekaterina Alexandrova are set for a first-round matchup that could determine Eala's next opponent.
According to ABS-CBN News, Eala will open against a qualifier in the main draw.
The Filipino player arrives after earning a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Nagoya, continuing a demanding Asian swing schedule.
The draw places Eala in the lower half, where she could meet either Fernandez or Alexandrova in the second round if she advances.
Their opening match brings together two players with recent tournament success and contrasting results across the season.
Alexandrova reached the quarterfinals in Beijing and Toronto, according to Last Word on Sports.
Her Beijing campaign included a victory over Linda Noskova, demonstrating her ability to defeat highly ranked opponents.
Fernandez won the tournament in Singapore, where she defeated Mirra Andreeva and Maja Chwalinska.
Last Word on Sports noted that Fernandez then suffered an early exit in Beijing, possibly because of fatigue following her previous tournament run.
Although Alexandrova holds the head-to-head advantage, Last Word on Sports assessed Fernandez as having a slight edge in their Wuhan opener and predicted a three-set victory for the Canadian.
Top Seeds and Other First-Round Matches
The tournament features a strong field led by World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed.
World No. 3 Jessica Pegula holds the second seed, while World No. 5 Mirra Andreeva is seeded third, according to ABS-CBN News.
The remaining top-eight seeds are Linda Noskova at No. 4, Elina Svitolina at No. 5, Karolina Muchova at No. 6, Iga Swiatek at No. 7 and Marta Kostyuk at No. 8.
The lineup places several established contenders and emerging players in the same WTA 1000 draw.
Other first-round matches highlighted by Last Word on Sports include Clara Tauson against Marie Bouzkova.
Tauson enters after losing three consecutive matches and holding a 16-22 record for the season, while Bouzkova arrives following a win in Beijing and a narrow three-set defeat to eventual champion Zheng.
In an all-Chinese matchup, Xinyu Wang faces Xiyu Wang on center court.
Xinyu holds a 22-22 record for the season and reached the quarterfinals in Singapore, while Xiyu recently won Asian Games gold after victories over Alex Eala and Zhang Shuai.
Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew also faces Magdalena Frech in the opening round.
Sawangkaew, 24, has a 3-6 record at tour level this season and a 34-13 record on the ITF Tour, while Frech, 28, reached the quarterfinals in Guadalajara and holds a 17-22 tour-level record.
Main-draw competition at the Wuhan Open runs from October 12 through October 18, with Eala's opening match against a qualifier setting the stage for a potential second-round meeting with Fernandez or Alexandrova.
