Reading welcomed Chelsea's under-21s to the Select Car Leasing Stadium for an EFL Trophy group match on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

The fixture offered Reading a chance to strengthen their position in the competition, while Chelsea looked to recover from an inconsistent start to their group campaign.

According to The Tilehurst End's match preview, Reading entered the contest after scoring five goals against MK Dons.

That result took the Royals' tally to 22 goals in nine league matches, underlining their attacking output despite the absence of striker Jack Marriott.

Paddy Lane and Josh Stokes were among the standout performers in that victory.

Lane scored the opening goal, while Stokes contributed two assists, nine passes into the final third and seven recoveries, according to The Tilehurst End.

Kyreece Lisbie also made a significant contribution, scoring twice and forcing an own goal in Reading's 5-1 win.

The performance added to the team's attacking options as it continued its league campaign alongside its cup commitments.

Chelsea's Mixed EFL Trophy Form

Reading's strong league form contrasted with Chelsea's mixed results in the EFL Trophy.

Before the meeting, Chelsea's under-21s had drawn with Bristol Rovers and lost to Wycombe Wanderers, leaving them third in their group after two matches, according to The Tilehurst End.

Chelsea's academy side had, however, recorded a 3-1 victory over Fulham's under-21s in its most recent match.

Harrison Bettoni, Reggie Watson and Leo Black scored, while Chizaram Ezenwata provided two assists and Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli added another, according to the preview.

That victory lifted Chelsea to fifth in Premier League 2, one point behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

The result offered a more positive indication of the young side's form in the league than its early EFL Trophy results had shown.

The EFL Trophy standings published by BBC Sport on October 13 showed Sheffield Wednesday leading Northern Group A with six points from two matches.

Accrington Stanley had four points, while Salford City and Sunderland U21 each had one.

In Northern Group B, Wigan Athletic topped the table with six points from two games, followed by Crewe Alexandra on four.

Blackpool had two points, while Aston Villa U21 had yet to register a point.

Bradford City led Northern Group C with six points and a goal difference of plus five.

Newcastle United U21 had three points, Rotherham United had two, and York City had one.

Chesterfield occupied first place in Northern Group D with five points from two matches.

Port Vale had four points, Manchester City U21 had three, and Mansfield Town remained without a point.

Stockport County led Northern Group E with six points and eight goals scored in two matches.

Tranmere Rovers had three points from one game, while Everton U21 and Shrewsbury Town had no points at the time of the published standings.

The Reading-Chelsea fixture was scheduled for a 7 p. m.

kickoff on October 13 at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, with coverage listed on Sky Sports+.

National League referee George Laflin was appointed to officiate the match, according to The Tilehurst End's preview.
