Departing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed his one regret from his time at the club: not giving goalkeeper Joe Hart a chance to play.

Speaking on May 22, 2026, Guardiola confessed that he should have allowed Hart to prove his abilities after taking over in 2016.

Hart never made an appearance under Guardiola. He was loaned to Torino for two seasons before moving permanently to Burnley.

Before Guardiola's arrival, Hart was England's number one goalkeeper and had won two Premier League titles with City.

However, Guardiola preferred a goalkeeper with better footwork for his tactical system, leading to the signing of Claudio Bravo.

"I want to confess something, I have just one regret – I didn't give Joe Hart a chance with me, to prove how good a keeper he was," Guardiola said during a broadcast interview.

He acknowledged that managing a top squad involves many decisions, and mistakes are inevitable. "When you take a lot of decisions, you will make mistakes," he added.

Bravo remained the preferred choice for Guardiola's buildup style during that transition period at Manchester City.
