The Kelowna Rockets will host the Kitchener Rangers tonight, May 22, 2026, in the opening game of the 2026 Memorial Cup tournament in Kelowna, British Columbia.

This matchup is the second historical Memorial Cup meeting between the two franchises, following a 2003 contest won by Kitchener.

The tournament features 20 NHL prospects on the ice for the opening game.

Kelowna enters the game having rested since April 17, when their Western Hockey League season ended against the Everett Silvertips.

Forward Hayden Paupanekis, who joined the team from Spokane in January 2025, expressed anticipation for the tournament debut.

"We've all been waiting for this opportunity and we're super excited to get going," said Paupanekis (MTL).

The host team expects strong support from the local crowd. Paupanekis noted the impact of the home spectators on the roster.

"I think our crowd is going to be buzzing for us and we'll use that as energy," he said.

Paupanekis revealed that the tournament has been a primary focus since his trade to the Rockets.

"Ever since getting traded here, I've had the Memorial Cup in the back of my head. I've been super excited to get going ever since then," he added.

Kitchener Rangers Enter on High Note

Kitchener enters the competition following a 10-day break after capturing the Ontario Hockey League championship.

The Rangers completed a four-game sweep of Barrie to finish their postseason run with a 16-2 record.
