Liverpool FC has terminated the contract of head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect, the club announced on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

The decision follows an internal evaluation that deemed a management change necessary to move the English club forward.

Slot's second season ended with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League, though Liverpool secured Champions League football for the upcoming campaign.

The season was also marked by the preseason death of player Diogo Jota in a car accident, as well as quarterfinal exits in the FA Cup and Champions League, and a fourth-round elimination in the League Cup.

The club acknowledged Slot's achievements, including a Premier League title in his debut season at Anfield.

"We appreciate everything Slot has achieved enormously," Liverpool FC said in an official statement.

"Especially because that was supported by a work ethic, dedication and expertise, which further confirms our opinion that he is a leader in his field.

At the same time, we have jointly come to the conclusion that change is necessary to move the club forward."

The status of assistant coaches Sipke Hulshoff and Giovanni van Bronckhorst remains unclear.

Slot, speaking to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, offered a final message to supporters: "It was a great journey.

I am so grateful that we became champions last year."

The dismissal came just two weeks after Slot publicly expressed confidence in his future at the club.

"I have every reason to believe that I will be the manager of Liverpool next season," he had said in a press conference.
