Manchester United has set its sights on West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes as a key summer transfer target, following the club's qualification for the Champions League.
The 21-year-old Portugal international is seen as a priority for manager Michael Carrick, who is preparing for an expanded fixture list next season.

According to a report by journalist Dean Jones for Flashscore, Manchester United values Fernandes at approximately £50 million and is assessing the feasibility of the deal.
"United want to sign three midfield players during the transfer window, and 21-year-old Fernandes has emerged as one of the names under serious consideration," Jones said.
West Ham originally valued Fernandes in the £80 million range after signing him from Southampton for £42 million a year ago.
However, the club's relegation to the Championship has weakened its bargaining position, as it needs to sell players to maintain financial stability.
Manchester United is confident that a reduced fee can be agreed, making Fernandes a more attainable target than alternatives like Carlos Baleba.
