Everton is preparing a formal bid to sign Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley, while Championship club Cardiff City has joined a multi-club race to secure the 20-year-old on loan as of August 1, 2026.

The Premier League side is looking to bolster its attacking options following quiet transfer activity and subpar performances from current forwards Beto and Thierno Barry.

Fabrizio Romano reported the Merseyside club's interest, noting that a proposal for the young striker is currently being finalized.

Simultaneously, Cardiff City is eager to acquire Wheatley on a season-long loan to strengthen their forward line.

The Welsh side faces competition for the England Under-20 international from Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen, Dutch team SC Cambuur, and an unnamed Championship rival.

Wheatley is currently away on pre-season duty with Manchester United, though manager Michael Carrick excluded him from the traveling squad for the recent friendly against Atletico Madrid.

A final decision regarding his immediate destination is expected next week upon his return and consultation with his representatives.

The Carrington academy graduate made his Premier League debut against Sheffield United in April 2024, becoming United's 250th academy graduate.

He remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, with the Red Devils preferring a loan move over a permanent sale to preserve his long-term development.

Wheatley previously completed three loan spells in the EFL with Walsall, Northampton Town, and Bradford City.
