NBC Sports has introduced a new live at-bat breakdown feature called "Inside the Pitch" that is changing how Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts present the game.

The feature focuses on the strategic confrontations between pitchers and hitters.

Debuting alongside former pitchers Adam Ottavino and Clayton Kershaw during the network's initial broadcast in late March, the feature has received significant praise after two months on air.

Focus on Micro-Decisions

Play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti discussed the operational impact of the new broadcast strategy during a recent appearance on The Athletic's Starkville podcast.

"It wasn't my idea, but I'm really glad they've parachuted me into it," Benetti said.

Benetti noted that the broadcast element successfully shifts focus onto the fundamental micro-decisions and competitive strategies that dictate outcomes between the mound and the batter's box.

"We know that so much of the game is decided between batter and pitcher," he said.

"Most of this is all alchemy, as Adam Ottavino called it a couple of weeks ago — about deciding how to confound hitters.

For pitchers, that is the whole idea," Benetti added.

The current broadcast framework utilizes existing infrastructure like the umpire cam, allowing Benetti to directly prompt analysts regarding real-time mechanical adjustments, pitch selection, and hitter mindsets mid-at-bat.

"The pleasure I get from being able to say, 'Hey Adam, what did you see on that last swing?'
