Newgarden overtook Marcus Ericsson on lap 177 and held on to win by 0.6613 seconds.
It was his sixth career victory at the short oval in Madison, Illinois.
Christian Rasmussen of Ed Carpenter Racing finished third. Rinus VeeKay, driving for Juncos Hollinger Racing, placed fourth after starting 13th.
Rain Disrupts Strategy
The 260-lap race started 20 minutes early due to incoming weather. Two rain delays forced neutralizations, with the first lasting 40 minutes.
A second brief shower altered team strategies. Championship leader Alex Palou ran out of fuel in the pit lane and dropped two laps behind.
VeeKay recovered from a practice crash in turn three to qualify 13th. Excellent pit stops moved his No. 76 Chevrolet into the top five.
He challenged Rasmussen for third after the final restart but could not pass. The fourth-place finish is his best result of the season.
VeeKay's Season Best
VeeKay now has three top-10 finishes in 2026: ninth in St. Petersburg, sixth at the Indianapolis 500, and fourth at Gateway.
He earned 175 points and sits 13th in the championship.
