The victory marked Ferrari's first race win of the 2026 season and ended a personal winless streak for Hamilton that dated back to the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix.
The result also created the first all-British podium in Formula 1 since 1968.
Race Decided by Strategy
Hamilton benefited from a mid-race virtual safety car period while already on course to beat Russell and championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
The strategy allowed Hamilton to pit and return to the track in the lead, avoiding a direct on-track battle with the Mercedes drivers.
Antonelli ultimately retired from second place with four laps remaining.
Following the race, Hamilton expressed deep emotions regarding the milestone victory after enduring a difficult first season with Ferrari in 2025.
During that season, he suffered consecutive Q1 qualifying exits and finished 86 points behind teammate Charles Leclerc.
"I don't really have a message right now," sighed Hamilton during his lowest point at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix qualifying session.
Hamilton later acknowledged the support he received during that challenging period.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the support that I've had all year. I wouldn't have made it through this year without them," stated Hamilton regarding his fans.
Reflecting on the conclusion of the 2025 season, Hamilton had emphasized the necessity of a complete winter overhaul with the Italian team.
