Barry drew attention when he described England's first-half performance against Croatia as "complicated and confusing" during a live halftime broadcast, despite the team eventually winning 4-2 in Dallas.

The assistant coach, who joined Thomas Tuchel's staff in January 2025, also delivered a detailed tactical critique during the interval of the match against Ghana, noting the team was playing too deep.
Manchester City defender Nico O'Reilly dismissed any notion of dressing room frustration regarding the public criticism, emphasizing the squad's preference for direct communication over vague encouragement.
"Anthony's very honest, straight to the point, and that's the best way to be," said O'Reilly, who is currently operating at left-back for the national team during the tournament.
