McLaren Formula 1 team principal Andrea Stella called for an intensified development program on Saturday, June 27, 2026, after the team fell behind its main rivals during the Austrian Grand Prix qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring.
Drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri secured the sixth and seventh starting positions respectively, qualifying four-tenths of a second behind pole-sitter George Russell on the short Spielberg circuit.

Stella noted that while Mercedes remains the fastest car, followed by Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren, recent aerodynamic and engine upgrades from their competitors have altered the development race.
“Wat betreft de competitiviteit van McLaren is een algemene observatie van dit jaar dat — in tegenstelling tot de reglementen van voorgaande jaren — het krachtsverschil dit seizoen behoorlijk constant lijkt te zijn,” said Stella to RacingNews365.
The team principal noted that within the top group of teams, incremental upgrades make the ultimate difference on the track.
“Binnen die groep van drie teams maken de upgrades vervolgens het verschil.
We hebben dat gezien met de upgrades die Ferrari heeft meegebracht, plus de motorupdate die ze hier hebben; ze hebben simpelweg een stap voorwaarts gezet,” said Stella.
Stella praised the extensive developments brought by rival teams to the Austrian event.
“De upgrades van Red Bull zijn qua omvang behoorlijk indrukwekkend, en ze waren hier dan ook sneller dan McLaren.
Het is dus een upgrade-oorlog met een constant patroon qua competitiviteit,” said Stella.
