Western Europe is experiencing its most severe heatwave on record, forcing over 1,000 schools in the UK to close and causing a surge in hospital admissions.

The central and eastern United States also face intense heat ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, according to The Guardian.

Extreme temperatures raise difficult questions about daily wardrobe choices.

Los Angeles stylist Sophie Strauss notes that dressing for extreme heat remains a constant struggle for most people trying to stay comfortable while masking body sweat.

Warm-weather dressing requires garments that effectively move heat and moisture away from the body.

Experts generally recommend prioritizing natural fibers like cotton and linen, though final choices regarding fit and form remain personal.

Choosing the Right Fabrics

Sophie Strauss observes that most individuals prefer clothing that is a bit looser and more flowy. These silhouettes prevent materials from clinging to the skin during high temperatures.

Dr. Saetbyul Park, assistant professor of apparel and textile design at Michigan State University, states that linen is one of the coolest fabrics for summer due to its breathability and moisture absorption.

Its lightweight and stiff structure prevents it from clinging when wet.

Dr. Park also recommends cotton because it is absorbent, breathable, easy to care for, and durable.

However, heavy cotton fabrics like denim trap heat and become heavy with sweat, making lighter alternatives like chambray preferable.

While silk is a natural fiber, experts suggest avoiding it in extreme weather.
