Organizers officially canceled gospel singer Kirk Franklin's scheduled "Gospel on Independence" concert at Independence Mall on Sunday, June 29, 2026, due to severe weather conditions in Philadelphia.

The outdoor event, part of the Wawa Welcome America Festival, was initially delayed after officials detected local lightning and thunder before being entirely called off.

According to festival organizers, attempts to restart the performance failed, and severe inclement weather forced the cancellation.

Wawa Welcome America officials confirmed there are currently no plans to reschedule the concert.

After the cancellation notice, Franklin briefly interacted with departing fans by standing on top of an SUV at the venue shortly before a heavy downpour began.

He later addressed the cancellation via a video posted on his personal Instagram page.

"I need the weather to repent! LOL!

😂❤️🙏🏽" stated Franklin in his video caption, expressing his excitement for the Philadelphia show.

Franklin described his personal disappointment regarding the sudden disruption. "People were really disappointed," he wrote.

"But I need you to know that I’m more disappointed because I was really, really, really ready to go.

I love Philadelphia. I’ll get back, man.

I can’t let Philly down like that."

Attendees who spent hours waiting at Independence Mall shared the singer's sentiment. One fan commented on the Instagram post: "My feet still hurting from standing out there waiting."

Separately, a video surfaced showing security guards holding Franklin back during a verbal confrontation with an unidentified attendee who yelled that the singer and his wife needed to repent.

Law enforcement officers subsequently escorted the man out of the venue.

Before the cancellation, attendees enjoyed opening acts and local food vendors at Independence Mall as part of the festival celebrating the nation's 250th birthday.

The Wawa Welcome America Festival continues this week with the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Pride concert on Tuesday, the "Salute to Service" concert on Thursday, and the Pops on Independence concert on Friday.
