Defending champion Iga Swiatek and Alexander Zverev will seek to solidify their grass-court credentials in second-round matches at the All England Club on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
Both players secured hard-fought victories in their opening matches of the tournament.
Swiatek Faces Pliskova
Swiatek advanced to face Karolina Pliskova after an emotional win against Taylor Townsend on Centre Court.
The top seed has experienced inconsistent form since winning her sixth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon 12 months ago.
"I think the whole process of opening the court and playing as a defending champion is for sure really emotional," Swiatek said.
She noted that her previous triumph on grass remains a career pinnacle, amplifying the pressure in her opening match.
"Last year probably the most amazing thing in my tennis career happened here. So I felt it also today," she added.
Swiatek holds a perfect head-to-head record against Pliskova, including a shutout victory in the Italian Open final five years ago.
The Czech former world number one has climbed back to 73rd in the rankings following a foot injury.
Zverev Takes on Royer
In the men's draw, fourth seed Alexander Zverev advanced to face Valentin Royer after defeating Belgian youth Alexander Blockx in four sets.
Despite his recent French Open victory, Zverev has never progressed past the fourth round at Wimbledon in nine attempts.
"For me, the draw doesn't really matter, because I have played a top-10 opponent one time in my career here, which was Milos Raonic, in 2017," Zverev said.
The German emphasized that his historical difficulties stem from his own performances rather than opponent quality.
"All the other years, I have lost to players outside of the top 10. So it's really about me," he said.
Other Thursday Action
American sixth seed Taylor Fritz defeated compatriot Patrick Kypson 6-2, 6-2, 7-5 to secure a third-round berth.
Fifth-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur also progressed in straight sets against France's Adrian Mannarino.
Wildcard entrant Grigor Dimitrov returned from a pectoral injury sustained during last year's tournament, setting up a match against Jakub Mensik on Court One.
"I'm very grateful to Wimbledon for trusting me with a wildcard. That shows appreciation, and I felt a lot of love out there," Dimitrov told the BBC.
"At the same time, I don't want to let people down," he added.
The winner of the match between Maya Joint and Alexandra Eala will face either Swiatek or Pliskova in the round of 32.
2022 champion Elena Rybakina is scheduled last on Centre Court against Caty McNally.
