The death of a 17-year-old girl in Pattaya has cast a harsh light on the dangers lurking within Thailand's nightlife industry.

Thunchanok Donhomla arrived in the coastal city just a week before she was killed, allegedly by a 62-year-old Australian man.

Simon Peter Carman has been charged with murder, concealing a corpse, and abduction of a minor. He denies the allegations.

Police say CCTV footage shows Donhomla holding Carman's hand as they entered his condo. Her body was later found in a suitcase near railway tracks.

A Community in Shock

Workers in Pattaya's Jomtien area, where Carman frequented, expressed fear and unease after the news broke.

One ladyboy, Sky Kanyarat, recalled Carman visiting her bar on the night of the alleged murder. She described him as drunk and wobbly.

Kanyarat said she has experienced violence from clients before, including strangulation. Despite the risks, she said she likes her work.

But others in the lane are reconsidering their safety.

Carman was a regular at a nearby bar for months. The owner, who knew him for eight years, said she was shocked.

Other customers described him as “strange” and not well-liked.

Donhomla came from the impoverished province of Kalasin. Her stepmother, Oradee Bussarakum, demands justice.
