The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have shut down both lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway near Hillview, south of Clarenville, after a serious motor vehicle collision on Saturday, July 4, 2026.

Emergency crews responded to the scene near the Route 205 turn-off, where the roadway was left completely impassable, according to reports from CBC News and VOCM.

Officials stated that no detours are available in the area, leading to expectations of significant travel disruptions for motorists.

The RCMP issued a statement noting that the highway will remain blocked for an extended period while investigations and cleanup operations continue.

The closure is expected to last "an undetermined period," the news release said.

Police acknowledged the substantial delays caused by the incident and urged drivers to approach the region with extreme caution or avoid it entirely.

"Motorists are asked to avoid the area and delay travel plans," the RCMP news release stated.

RCMP Clarenville expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of the public as first responders continue their work at the crash site.
