A truck ended up without its roof near Raleigh's Peace Street Bridge on Wednesday afternoon, leaving debris spread beneath the low-clearance crossing.
The vehicle was parked on North West Street around 1 p. m.
, as police vehicles gathered and officers worked to establish what caused the crash.
Citing WRAL News, the circumstances of the incident were still unclear as of Wednesday evening, and authorities had not confirmed a cause.
A Crossing Known for Repeated Strikes
The bridge is locally nicknamed the Peace Street Peeler because of repeated incidents involving trucks trying to pass underneath it.
Warning signs installed by Raleigh in September list the structure's clearance at 12 feet, 4 inches.
Julie Moon, who works at a nearby business, described the force of the collision and how it affected the building where she works.
"Another day, another truck getting stuck underneath the bridge," Moon said, adding that the crash was loud and the building completely vibrated.
The latest case follows multiple crashes at the bridge over a two-month period during the summer, highlighting the recurring problem of vehicles exceeding the available clearance.
In September, the city added illuminated warning signs near the bridge to alert drivers to the height restriction.
Sky 5 flew over the area on Wednesday afternoon and observed the roofless truck on the nearby street, with debris still scattered along Peace Street directly beneath the bridge.
WRAL News said it was working to obtain further details, while police had not publicly confirmed the cause in information available Wednesday evening.
