Flood watches have been issued for 17 New Jersey counties as severe thunderstorms threaten the region on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

The storms could hamper recovery efforts after recent extreme heat and turbulent weather left over 120,000 homes and businesses without power.

According to the National Weather Service, localized downpours may cause flash flooding.

Meteorologists warned that some areas could see 3 to 4 inches of rain, with rates exceeding 2 inches per hour.

Most areas south of Interstate 78 are under a level 2 out of 5 slight risk for severe weather.

Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union counties are under a flood watch from Sunday afternoon through early Tuesday.

Camden, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, and Morris counties are under a separate watch until Monday evening.

The National Weather Service also warned of damaging wind gusts that could down trees and wires, causing power outages.

Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s to mid-90s, with heavier storms developing later in the day.

High heat warnings have expired, but air quality alerts and heat advisories remain active across much of New Jersey.

Conditions are expected to improve slightly on Monday, with temperatures dropping into the upper 70s and low 80s.

However, the threat of additional heavy rainfall and flash flooding persists through the afternoon.

The National Weather Service noted that flash flooding impacts could be significant over the next couple of days.

Conditions are expected to clear by Wednesday.
