A large fire broke out at a scrapyard on Radford Road in Old Basford, Nottingham, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, leading to evacuations and road closures as thick smoke blanketed the area.

Emergency services responded to reports of the incident at 10:31 a. m.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service dispatched six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform to battle the flames.

Police evacuated residents from adjacent homes to ensure public safety. Authorities confirmed that Radford Road will remain closed at the Northgate junction for an extended period.

"Police have evacuated a number of properties in the area.

Road closures will be in place for some time in Radford Road to the junction of Northgate," Nottinghamshire Police stated.

The thick black smoke from the scrapyard severely impacted visibility, with reports of plumes reaching as far as Nottingham's Old Market Square.

Officials urged the public to avoid the emergency zone.

A Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue spokesperson said, "We're currently in attendance at a scrapyard fire on Radford Road, Basford.

The call came in at 10:31am."

Firefighters are working to control both subsurface and surface blazes. Nearby residents and workers have been advised to keep doors and windows shut.

"We've got six fire appliances and an aerial ladder platform in attendance, and understand there is a large smoke plume," the spokesperson added.

Officials emphasized that keeping surrounding streets clear is vital for emergency vehicles. The response team remains on scene as firefighting efforts continue.

"Please close doors and windows if you live or work locally," the spokesperson said.

No injuries have been reported. Crews from multiple stations are expected to remain at Radford Road until the area is fully secured.

"Importantly, please avoid the area - this is an emergency incident and it's important our crews have space to work and access the site," the spokesperson concluded.
